Renee Fennell-Dempsey, DMD
Greetings! Welcome to the New Era Dental Society's Web Site!
Whether you are a member of New Era Dental Society (NEDS), a prospective member, a student, a fellow professional, a member of the community, one of our sponsors / donors or simply an information seeker, we want your experience with us to be enriching.
Truly it is an honor to serve as the 2010-2011 president of this great organization. For thirty nine years, New Era Dental Society has served as a vanguard for oral health care in communities of color in the tri state area and it is a privilege to serve an association of such outstanding professionals.
Under the umbrella of the National Dental Association (ndaonline.org) and with the support of our sponsors and donors, NEDS remains a vital resource to African American and minority dentists, dental allied health professionals, dental and dental hygiene school students as well as to the community-at-large, particularly the underserved population. This year our Society is focused on increasing membership and participation while continuously promoting education, scholarship, mentorship, legislative and economic empowerment and community service.

2010 is a year of merit for NEDS, as our chapter won the Colgate Bright Smiles Bright Futures Scholarship Award. Last year, thanks to the leadership of our immediate past president, Dr. Elsie Casimer, our Scholarship Fundraising Chairperson, Dr. Joan Malcolm, our fundraising committee and sponsors/donors, NEDS gave close to $10,000 in scholarships and sponsorships to deserving dental and dental hygiene students, mentoring them to become our professionals and leaders of tomorrow. We are very proud of our scholarship program and it is my intention to strengthen our alliances within the community to expand on their success.
With the nation’s unparalleled economic environment, NEDS needs you to join our coalition to help us combat the continued challenge of increasing (oral) healthcare disparities in communities of color. We applaud President Obama’s Health Care Reform Act which provides for the oral healthcare of children. However we cannot stop here. NEDS works with federal, state and local legislatures to help make certain that this also becomes a reality for adults in the near future. Together we can weather the financial storm and impact the oral healthcare of all people. Our 2010-2011 Executive Board is prepared to work with our members and alliances to meet the challenges ahead within our profession and I am excited about the possibilities!
As we prepare for our 40th Anniversary Celebration in 2011, we take this time honor our rich history and remember and commemorate the shoulders upon which we stand, all of our pioneers such as, Dr. Joffie Pittman, Dr. Floyd Baker and Dr. Joseph Johnson, leaders in the dental profession. We hope you will join us for an exciting year of outreach activities culminating with our 40th Anniversary Scholarship Gala.
I encourage everyone to continue to advocate for universal oral health care for all Americans and on behalf of our members, I thank you in advance for your support and participation. Together, NEDS can continue its proud heritage and legacy to empower our membership, impact oral health in the neighborhoods we serve, and remain a valuable resource in the community!
